Merik Carter, a talented infielder, has recently made a significant move from UAH Chargers to GWU. In this interview, Merik opened about his life as a student-athlete, his goals, and the unique challenges he faces. Here’s a glimpse into his journey and insights.
When asked how he manages to balance his academic responsibilities with the demands of being a student-athlete, Merik shared his straightforward yet effective strategy. “I get my work done as soon as I can to leave me with extra time to go to the field, cages, and still be able to stay on my nutrition plan.” This proactive approach allows Merik to dedicate enough time to both his studies and his athletic training, ensuring he excels in both areas.
Merik’s daily routine is a testament to his dedication and discipline. “I wake up at 9am and take a cold shower. Around 10:30-11 I get some breakfast and head to the gym. I’ll work out from 11:30-1 to around 1-1:30. After workouts, I go to the field for early work and hot yoga. Early work and stretching ends at 3, leaving me a 45-minute break to grab some food and drinks. I show up around 3:45 to get ready for BP and groundballs. After BP is done, I chill out until game time.” This detailed schedule highlights the commitment required to succeed as a student-athlete.
Merik’s goals reflect his ambition and faith. “A goal I have set for myself is to play professional baseball, no matter how I do it or how I get there. Another goal would be to let my faith in Jesus Christ be testimony to others in the sports world.” His determination to reach the professional level and his desire to inspire others through his faith are driving forces in his life.
Outside of baseball, Merik has a strong commitment to helping others. “I love working out with the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). The VFW is something I have done since I was a child. Helping veterans from foreign wars and being in their presence and picking their minds is something that interests me.” This involvement with the Veterans of Foreign Wars shows Merik’s dedication to giving back to the community and his respect for those who have served.
For young athletes looking to follow in his footsteps, Merik offers heartfelt advice. “Be yourself and trust the process. The process of the sports world is tough and mentally draining. Trusting God has your plan and will provide and leave you in a better mental spot. Taking time for yourself and finding YOURSELF is very important in growing and maturing in the game. BELIEVE in yourself and always bet on yourself.”
Merik’s vision for his future in baseball goes beyond personal achievements. “I want to leave baseball at an old age with kids wanting to be themselves and believing in themselves. I don’t want to end my career until then. I don’t want the youth to feel, micromanaged into something they aren’t. I want them to play the game the way it should be played, and that’s FUN.” Merik Carter’s journey from the UAH Chargers to GWU is not just about a transfer; it’s about dedication, faith, and the desire to inspire the next generation. His story serves as a beacon for aspiring athletes who aim to balance academics, athletics, and personal growth while staying true to themselves.
